What is Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw Man is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The story follows Denji, a young man burdened by his father's debt who survives by working as a devil hunter alongside his canine companion Pochita, a chainsaw devil. After being betrayed and killed, Denji merges with Pochita's heart, becoming the hybrid known as Chainsaw Man. He is recruited by the Public Safety Devil Hunter organization and begins a new life fighting devils while chasing simple dreams — touching a breast, eating jam toast, and living a normal life. The series debuted in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in late 2018 and quickly became a global phenomenon. Its first season anime adaptation by Studio MAPPA aired in 2022, bringing Fujimoto's visceral art style and unpredictable storytelling to a wider audience. What sets Chainsaw Man apart from other shonen series is its irreverent tone, graphic violence, and willingness to kill off major characters without warning. The story balances gut-wrenching tragedy with absurdist comedy, creating a reading experience that defies expectations at every turn.

Tip: Start with the anime on Crunchyroll or Netflix for the full audio-visual experience, then continue the story from Volume 6 of the manga, which picks up where Season 1 ends.

Devil System & Contracts

Devils in Chainsaw Man are born from human fears — the more widespread a fear, the more powerful its corresponding devil. The Gun Devil, feared by millions worldwide, is one of the most devastating entities in the series. Devils can form contracts with humans, granting access to their powers in exchange for something of value. Contract costs vary widely: Aki Hayakawa offers the Curse Devil a year of his lifespan for each use of the Curse Nail, while Denji's friend Power trades her Blood Devil blood for Power's continued existence as a fiend. Contracts are binding agreements sealed through physical contact, typically a handshake. Breaking a contract carries severe consequences, often death. Some devils also possess unique abilities tied to their domain — the Fox Devil can bite enemies on command, the Ghost Devil manipulates invisible hands, and the Future Devil grants glimpses of impending doom. Understanding the contract system is essential to grasping the power dynamics of the Chainsaw Man universe. Hunters must carefully consider what they are willing to sacrifice before entering any pact.

Tip: Pay close attention to contract terms when they are established. Fujimoto often foreshadows major plot developments through the specific conditions of a contract.

Public Safety & Devil Hunters

The Public Safety Devil Hunter organization is the primary government agency responsible for dealing with devil-related threats in Japan. Operating under the auspices of the national government, Public Safety devil hunters are divided into divisions, with each division handling different regions and threat levels. Division 4, led by Makima, serves as the main setting for Part 1 of the story. Its members include Denji, Aki Hayakawa, Power, Kobeni Higashiyama, and Himeno. Devil hunters undergo rigorous training and are equipped with special weapons made from devil materials. The job is extraordinarily dangerous — mortality rates are high, and psychological trauma is the norm rather than the exception. Beyond Public Safety, there are independent devil hunters who operate without government backing, often taking riskier contracts for higher pay. Kishibe, the most experienced devil hunter in the series, represents the pinnacle of human capability against devils, relying on skill and experience rather than powerful contracts. The organization's hierarchy, political maneuvering, and internal conflicts form a central pillar of the series' narrative.

Tip: The relationship between devil hunters and the devils they fight is deliberately ambiguous. Many hunters develop genuine bonds with their contracted devils, blurring the line between enemy and ally.

Hybrids & Fiends Explained

Two unique classifications of beings exist in Chainsaw Man beyond ordinary humans and devils: fiends and hybrids. A fiend is a devil that has taken over a dead human body. The devil retains its personality and powers but gains a physical form that allows it to interact with the human world. Power the Blood Fiend is a prime example — she is a devil inhabiting a human corpse, capable of manipulating blood while maintaining her own distinct personality. Fiends can often be identified by their unusual head or facial features. A hybrid, by contrast, is a human who merged with a devil while still alive. Denji's fusion with Pochita makes him a hybrid — he retains his human consciousness, memories, and personality but can transform into a devil form at will by pulling a cord on his chest. Other hybrids include the Katana Man, Reze the Bomb Girl, and the Whip Hybrid. Hybrids are exceptionally rare and powerful because they combine human intelligence and adaptability with devil strength and regeneration. They can survive injuries that would kill ordinary humans or even regular devils.

Tip: A quick way to distinguish fiends from hybrids: fiends have devil personalities in human bodies, while hybrids have human personalities that can transform into devil forms.

The Gun Devil & Primal Fears

The Gun Devil stands as the most devastating entity in Chainsaw Man's modern history. In a single five-minute rampage across the globe, it killed 1.2 million people, causing unprecedented destruction that reshaped world geopolitics. Its power is directly proportional to humanity's fear of guns — a fear so widespread that the Gun Devil became one of the most powerful beings ever to exist. Nations scrambled to acquire pieces of its flesh, which could be used to form contracts or create powerful weapons. Beyond the Gun Devil, there are Primal Fears — devils that have existed since the dawn of humanity, representing fundamental terrors like darkness, falling, death, and aging. These Primal devils have never been killed, as their concepts are intrinsic to human existence. The Darkness Devil, encountered in Hell during the International Assassins Arc, exemplifies their terrifying nature: it can speak, command absolute obedience, and kill with mere gestures. Primal devils operate on a level that even powerful contract users cannot comprehend, making them the true apex predators of the Chainsaw Man universe.

Tip: Primal devils are essentially immortal — as long as humans continue to experience the fear they represent, these devils cannot be truly destroyed.

Denji's Powers

As the Chainsaw Man hybrid, Denji possesses a remarkable array of abilities stemming from his fusion with Pochita. His primary power is transformation — by pulling a starter cord on his chest, he transforms into Chainsaw Man, with chainsaws emerging from his arms and head. In this form, he gains enormous physical strength, speed, endurance, and regenerative capabilities that allow him to recover from injuries that would instantly kill any normal human. Denji can even survive being reduced to just his heart, as demonstrated early in the series. His chainsaws can tear through most devil flesh with ease, making him a highly effective combatant against a wide range of opponents. Perhaps the most significant of Denji's abilities is his power to erase devils entirely by consuming them. When Denji eats a devil, that devil's concept is removed from existence — the fear it represented no longer produces devils, and any knowledge of that devil disappears from the world. This is why many powerful devils both fear and seek to control Denji. Throughout the series, Denji's powers evolve as he faces stronger adversaries and learns to use his hybrid abilities more creatively, combining his regeneration with increasingly aggressive combat tactics.

Tip: Denji's regeneration is tied to his emotional state and will to live. When his spirit breaks, his healing slows dramatically — a key detail in several critical battles.

Key Organizations & Factions

The Chainsaw Man world is defined by multiple organizations and factions vying for power and influence. The Public Safety Devil Hunter organization represents the Japanese government's official response to devil threats, but its internal politics and leadership agendas often complicate its mission. Makima, as the Control Devil, manipulates the organization from within for her own purposes. Beyond Japan, various nations maintain their own devil hunting divisions and weapon programs. The Soviet Union developed hybrid weapons including Reze the Bomb Girl, while the United States aggressively pursues pieces of the Gun Devil's flesh to maintain military superiority. The International Assassins, a collection of elite killers from around the world, are hired collectively to target Denji during the International Assassins Arc, showcasing the global network of devil-related commerce. Hell itself operates as a parallel dimension where devils go when killed on Earth and where Primal devils reside. The Chainsaw Devil Church, which emerges in Part 2, represents the cult of personality that has grown around Chainsaw Man, with worshippers treating Denji's alter ego as a deity. Understanding these factions and their competing interests is key to following the series' complex political landscape.

Tip: Keep track of which nation or organization possesses Gun Devil fragments — control of these pieces is a major driver of the plot's political conflict.

Story Arcs & Reading Order

Chainsaw Man is divided into two principal parts, with Part 3 announced but not yet released. Part 1, titled "Public Safety Saga," runs from Volume 1 to Volume 11 (Chapters 1 through 97) and follows Denji's journey from impoverished devil hunter to Public Safety operative through increasingly devastating conflicts. The major arcs within Part 1 are: Introduction Arc, Bat Devil Arc, Eternity Devil Arc, Katana Man Arc, Bomb Girl Arc, International Assassins Arc, and the climactic Control Devil Arc. Part 2, titled "Academy Saga," begins with Volume 12 (Chapter 98) and shifts focus to Asa Mitaka, a high school student who becomes the host of the War Devil Yoru. This part runs alongside Denji's continued story as he attempts to live a normal high school life while being hunted by new threats. Part 2 arcs include the Aquarium Arc, Justice Devil Arc, and the ongoing Falling Devil Arc among others. For newcomers, the ideal reading experience is to start with the MAPPA anime adaptation (12 episodes covering the Introduction through Katana Man arcs), then continue with the manga from Chapter 39. The entire series is available in English through Viz Media's Shonen Jump app and print editions. The anime has been confirmed for a second season and a feature film adapting the Bomb Girl Arc, though release dates are pending.

Tip: Fujimoto's one-shot works "Look Back," "Goodbye, Eri," and "Just Listen to the Song" share thematic DNA with Chainsaw Man and are worth reading as companion pieces.
