Himeno Overview

Himeno is a senior Public Safety Devil Hunter who serves as Denji's first field partner and Aki Hayakawa's closest friend and previous partner. She is a veteran hunter who has survived long enough to have lost multiple partners before Aki, giving her a weathered perspective on the devil hunting profession. Her right eye is perpetually covered by an eyepatch, the cost of her contract with the Ghost Devil.

Himeno represents the human cost of devil hunting: she is a competent fighter who has lost every single partner she has ever worked with, each death adding to her survivor's guilt. Her care for Aki goes beyond professional partnership into a love she cannot properly express, complicated by her fear that getting close to anyone in this profession means losing them. She is warm, slightly unprofessional (she drinks heavily and smokes), and genuinely caring in a world that punishes attachment.

Ghost Devil Contract

Himeno's contract with the Ghost Devil grants her the ability to summon an invisible spectral hand that can interact with the physical world. The hand is immensely strong, capable of restraining devils and manipulating the environment. The Ghost Devil's true form, which manifests as a massive humanoid figure composed of countless arms, can be summoned at extreme cost: Himeno's entire body.

The Ghost Devil also has a unique ability: it can sense the fear in living beings and is instinctively drawn to those who are terrified. This makes it effective against frightened opponents but potentially unreliable when Himeno herself is afraid. Her right eye was the down payment for this contract. The Ghost Devil, like most devils, is not benevolent: it acts according to its nature and the specific terms of the agreement, not out of loyalty to its contractor.

Sacrifice & Legacy

Himeno's death during the Eternity Devil Arc is the series' first major character death and sets the tone for the tragedy that follows. When the Eternity Devil traps Division 4 in an endless hotel corridor, Himeno realizes that Denji, in chainsaw form, is the only one who can kill the devil. When Denji hesitates due to fear, Himeno makes the ultimate sacrifice: she offers her entire body to the Ghost Devil to summon its full form, buying Denji the time he needs to recover his resolve.

The Ghost Devil devours her completely, leaving no body behind. Her death haunts the series: Aki is shattered by losing the person closest to him, Kobeni is traumatized by witnessing the death of her partner, and Denji carries the guilt of her sacrifice into every subsequent battle. Before her death, Himeno made Aki promise to quit being a devil hunter, a promise he could never keep. Her legacy is the protective instinct she passed to Aki, who would later sacrifice himself for the family he built with Denji and Power.

Combat & Personality

Himeno is not the strongest fighter in the division, but she compensates with experience and strategic thinking. She understands devil psychology, knowing when to push and when to retreat. Her Ghost Devil's invisible hand allows for versatile combat: she can strike from unexpected angles, restrain enemies, and interact with the environment without revealing her position. She also carries a handgun, though she relies more on her contract ability.

Her personality is that of an older sister figure: she teases Denji, drinks heavily after missions, and dotes on Aki in ways he pretends not to notice. She is one of the few characters in Chainsaw Man who is unambiguously good, motivated by genuine care for her colleagues rather than power, revenge, or self-interest. Her death is the series' statement that goodness offers no protection in the world of devils, only meaning.

Relationships

Aki Hayakawa

Himeno's most important relationship. She trained Aki, fought beside him, and loved him in a way neither could fully acknowledge. Her death fundamentally changes Aki: he becomes more protective, more reckless, and more willing to sacrifice himself for others, mirroring what she did for him.

Denji

Himeno sees Denji as a child who needs guidance, not a weapon to be used. She is one of the few characters who treats Denji with genuine kindness rather than viewing him as a tool. Her sacrifice for him plants the seed of selflessness that will define Denji's later character growth.

Kobeni Higashiyama

As Kobeni's partner, Himeno serves as a protective figure. Kobeni's terror during the Eternity Devil mission is contrasted with Himeno's calm determination, and Himeno's death is the traumatic event that triggers Kobeni's hidden berserker state for the first time.
