Gun Devil Overview
The Gun Devil is one of the most powerful and feared devils in the Chainsaw Man universe, representing humanity's collective fear of firearms and gun violence. Its power is so immense that a single appearance in 1984 resulted in the deaths of 1.2 million people across the globe in just five minutes, an event known as the Gun Devil Incident. This cataclysm reshaped international politics, ended wars, and created a generation of devil hunters motivated by revenge against the entity that destroyed their families.
The Gun Devil's physical form is a massive amalgamation of firearms and ammunition, stretching kilometers in length. It moves at supersonic speeds and can target and kill individuals with absolute precision, shooting bullets that home in on their targets with supernatural accuracy. Its body is composed entirely of guns, bullets, and cartridges, a walking arsenal that embodies the industrialized fear of mass gun violence.
The Gun Devil Incident & Fragmentation
On November 18, 1984, the Gun Devil appeared in the United States and began a global rampage that lasted only five minutes but killed 1.2 million people across multiple countries. The incident occurred simultaneously in multiple locations, suggesting the Gun Devil can split its attention or move at speeds that make it functionally omnipresent over short durations. Aki Hayakawa's family was among the victims, with his younger brother Taiyo being the sole survivor of their household.
After the incident, the Gun Devil was somehow defeated and fragmented. The world's governments collected its pieces: the Soviet Union acquired 28% of its body, the United States held 20%, China possessed 11%, and various other nations claimed the remaining fragments. The 20% piece held by the United States was eventually acquired by Makima, who used it as the ultimate weapon in her arsenal. The Soviet 28% fragment, being the largest, was considered the most powerful and was used by the Soviet government until Makima seized it.
Makima's Control & Aki's Fate
Makima's possession of the Gun Devil represents one of her most devastating strategic moves. She sends Aki and the assault team to confront the Gun Devil, knowing that Aki's desire for revenge makes him predictable. During the confrontation, the 20% Gun Devil fragment kills most of the team. Aki attempts to use his Curse Devil contract, landing three hits with his nail sword, but the Gun Devil's sheer size and power render the Curse Devil's ritual ineffective. Aki is fatally wounded.
Makima then takes control of Aki's body using the Gun Devil within him, transforming him into the Gun Fiend. In this state, Aki's consciousness blends with the Gun Devil, causing him to hallucinate a joyful snowball fight with Denji while his body moves through Tokyo killing civilians. When Denji confronts him, he must kill his closest friend. This event is the emotional climax of the series. Makima later takes full control of the remaining Gun Devil fragments, absorbing its power into her own arsenal.
Power & Global Impact
The Gun Devil's existence fundamentally altered global politics in the Chainsaw Man universe. Its rampage caused nations to collectively agree to end all wars, as humanity's fear of guns was so overwhelming that armed conflict became unthinkable. This paradoxically weakened the War Devil (Yoru), who lost her power source when large-scale war ceased. The Gun Devil is thus indirectly responsible for Yoru's diminished state in Part 2 and her quest to restore Nuclear Weapons to humanity's memory.
In its fragmented state at 20% power, the Gun Devil remains a civilization-threatening weapon. At full power, it was arguably the most destructive single entity in the series before the introduction of Primordial Devils. Its fragments continue to be traded and weaponized by world governments, making it the most geopolitically significant devil in the Chainsaw Man universe.
