Beam Overview
Beam is the Shark Fiend, a member of Special Division 4 and one of Denji's most loyal allies. Unlike most fiends who retain human-like consciousness with devil traits, Beam is almost purely animalistic in behavior, communicating in simple phrases and acting on instinct. His defining characteristic is his fanatical devotion to Chainsaw Man (the true Chainsaw Devil, Pochita), whom he worships with religious fervor.
Beam forms a unique bond with Denji, serving as his most reliable combat partner after Aki and Power. His shark physiology grants him formidable physical strength and the ability to swim at incredible speeds, making him invaluable in aquatic combat situations. He can devour enemies whole with his shark jaws, a gruesome but effective combat technique. Despite his limited intelligence, Beam's loyalty is absolute: when Chainsaw Man comes to Hell, Beam recognizes him and assists without question.
Shark Fiend Abilities
As a fiend possessed by the Shark Devil, Beam possesses a shark-like head and enhanced physical capabilities. He can bite through most materials with his jaws, swallow enemies larger than himself, and navigate water at speeds that exceed any human swimmer. His body is more durable than a human's, and he possesses the fiend's standard regeneration through blood consumption.
Beam's most notable contribution to Denji's arsenal is his swimming ability: when Denji needs to escape or travel through water, Beam carries him while submerged, allowing for rapid aquatic movement. This tactical advantage proves critical during the Hell sequence and various water-based missions. Beam's head-eating technique, while disturbing, is effective for quickly eliminating lesser devils and clearing battlefields.
Loyalty to Chainsaw Man
Beam's devotion to Chainsaw Man is the core of his character. He recognizes Denji as the vessel of the Chainsaw Devil and treats him with reverence that borders on worship. This devotion is not fear (as devils typically feel toward Chainsaw Man) but genuine admiration. Beam is willing to die for Chainsaw Man without hesitation, a loyalty that makes him one of Denji's most trusted allies despite his simple nature.
Beam is killed during the Control Devil Arc, murdered by Makima as part of her systematic destruction of Denji's support network. His death, while less narratively weighted than Aki's or Power's, represents the loss of another genuine connection in Denji's life. Beam's loyalty was never rewarded, and his death reinforces the series' theme that those closest to Denji are systematically eliminated.
