Kishibe Overview
Kishibe is the captain of Special Division 4 and widely acknowledged as the strongest devil hunter in the Chainsaw Man universe. Unlike the young hunters under his command, Kishibe has survived decades of devil hunting through pure skill, paranoia, and an unwillingness to form emotional attachments. He is a living legend who has outlived every partner, every rival, and every devil that has crossed his path, earning him the title of the strongest purely human fighter in the series.
Kishibe serves as the only character in the series who consistently distrusts Makima and survives to act on that distrust. While others are seduced or controlled by her charisma, Kishibe maintains emotional distance from everyone, a survival strategy born from watching every person he has ever cared about die in this profession. His cold exterior masks a man who has suffered more loss than anyone else in the story and has learned that the only way to keep fighting is to stop feeling.
Devil Contracts & Combat Mastery
Kishibe maintains contracts with at least three devils: the Knife Devil, the Claw Devil, and the Needle Devil. These contracts are not for raw power but for utility: knives for close-quarters combat, claws for slashing damage at range, and needles for precision assassination. His true strength is not in his contracts but in his mastery of hand-to-hand combat, weapon proficiency, and tactical intelligence accumulated over decades of fighting.
His training of Denji and Power showcases his philosophy: power means nothing without control. He subjects them to brutal physical conditioning and psychological testing, believing that a devil hunter who cannot control their fear will die regardless of their strength. Role in the Makima Conspiracy
Kishibe is the only character to suspect Makima from the beginning and survive to oppose her. After the International Assassins Arc, he begins gathering evidence against her and forming a resistance. When Makima's control over Public Safety becomes absolute, Kishibe operates outside the organization, using his network of contacts to protect the remnants of Division 4. His plan to defeat Makima involves training Denji to fight not as Chainsaw Man but as a human who understands loss and sacrifice.
His conversation with Denji after Makima kills Power is one of the series' most important moments. Kishibe explains that Denji cannot defeat Makima through strength alone: he must understand her nature as a devil who cannot form equal relationships and exploit her inability to recognize love. This strategic insight directly enables Denji's victory, making Kishibe the architect of Makima's defeat even though he never directly fights her.
Relationship with Quanxi
Kishibe's relationship with Quanxi, the First Devil Hunter, represents his one acknowledged emotional connection. They were lovers and partners in the past, and Kishibe still carries feelings for her despite knowing she was controlled by Makima. When Quanxi appears as an enemy during the International Assassins Arc, Kishibe confronts her personally, one of the rare moments where his emotional control cracks. Their history reveals that even the strongest devil hunter is not immune to human connection, only better at surviving its loss.
