Santa Claus Overview
Santa Claus is one of the international assassins dispatched to capture Denji during the International Assassins Arc. The name is a code designation, and the assassin's true identity is unknown: Santa Claus communicates through a network of human puppets, never revealing the actual person behind the operation. This assassin is defined by a contract with the Doll Devil, allowing them to turn any human they touch into a mindless puppet under their complete control.
Santa Claus's fighting style is unique in Chainsaw Man: they never fight personally, instead sending waves of puppet soldiers to overwhelm enemies through sheer numbers. Each puppet retains basic motor functions and can wield weapons, creating a functional army out of innocent civilians. Santa Claus can also transfer their consciousness between puppets, meaning even destroying the current "body" does nothing to stop the real threat.
Doll Devil Contract & Puppet Army
The Doll Devil contract grants Santa Claus the ability to convert humans into puppets through physical touch. The process appears instantaneous and irreversible. Puppets obey Santa Claus's commands without question and can operate independently to carry out complex tasks. The cost of this contract is unknown, but the ability's scale suggests a substantial sacrifice.
During the International Assassins Arc, Santa Claus builds an army of puppets in Tokyo, using them to attack Denji and the Public Safety forces. The puppets are terrifying in their numbers but individually weak, functioning more as a siege weapon than a precision strike tool. Santa Claus also possesses a fragment of the Darkness Devil, obtained through unknown means, which grants limited access to darkness-based abilities including teleportation through shadows.
Battle with Denji & Darkness Devil
Santa Claus's confrontation with Denji escalates when they use the Darkness Devil fragment to transport everyone to Hell, summoning the Darkness Devil directly. This marks the first appearance of a primordial devil in the series and dramatically raises the stakes. The Darkness Devil is so overwhelmingly powerful that even Quanxi cannot meaningfully fight it. Santa Claus is ultimately consumed by the Darkness Devil, a fitting end for a character who treated humans as disposable tools.
Santa Claus represents the international scope of the Chainsaw Man world and the varying philosophies of devil fighting: while Japan uses contracts and hybrids, Germany (or whoever sent Santa Claus) uses mass conversion of civilians into weapons. The character serves as a cautionary example of what happens when devil contractors reach beyond their means, inadvertently summoning forces they cannot control.
